Meetup Overview

DSPT#66 – Going from Bio stats to sentences classification. (Aveiro)

published by Rodrigo Barros - 16 February, 2020

Ranging from Bioinformatics, showing the large impact of the field in our current society, to conversation topic classification, where you can learn how to identify the relevant topic in a sequence of sentences.

On the 28th of November at Bosch, we hosted DSPT’s 66th. This evening, we had two amazing talks with David Silva, PhD candidate at CIBIO-InBIO, and Pedro Verruma, an Engineering Manager at Talkdesk.

In the first talk, David Silva shared with us the rapid growth of the Bioinformatics field and the great impact that the field can have in our current society. These benefits include, but are not limited to, great advances in medical diagnostics, production of medicine, an increase of crop’s yield in agriculture, understanding of human history, biotech industry. The rapid development of this field is tightly connected to meaningful advances in AI.

In the second talk, Pedro Verruma shows us a contact centre that handles thousands of calls every day. For each call, it is important to identify the different intents expressed during a conversation. Pedro also showed us how it is possible to group similar moments using unsupervised methods.

Finally, we would like to thank Bosch for cooperating with DSPT in organizing this meetup.

And of course, no DSPT meetup would be complete without our group photo.
