Title: Distinguishing sounds with deep learning
Abstract: Sound is everywhere. We use it to communicate, listen to music, and sense the environment around us. At early ages, we learn to recognize and mimic sounds that shape the way we interact, and now machines can learn it too. We’ve seen how they tell dogs from cats, chat and even play games better than us, but what about discerning the sounds we hear every day? In this talk, we’re going to understand how it works.
Short bio: Ricardo is a Data Scientist at Kelvin Inc., where he focuses on ML approaches for control and optimization in the Oil & Gas industry. With a Computer Engineering BSc from UMinho, expertise in software architecture and distributed systems, he developed dataflow systems for real-time stream computing, integrated with online machine learning. Ricardo enjoys simplicity in his endeavors and is interested in brain-computer interfaces, as well as the intersection of Mathematics, Physics, and Computing.
Title: Genetic Algorithms: in search of the missing solution
Abstract: It is hard to search for something when we have no idea where it might be. Especially if we are searching in a large multidimensional space. If only you could search in parallel in multiple places and had a few arrows pointing you in the (possibly) right direction… Genetic Algorithms to the rescue! The talk will start with a brief overview on Genetic Algorithms, and then address a few practical tips and tricks and their influence on the outcome of the search. We’ll also see some examples of application, not all of them boring.
Short bio: Davide has a joint PhD degree from the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto since 2013. Adjunct Professor of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, he is an integrated researcher in the CIICESI center and collaborates with the Algoritmi Center. He has participated in several Research Projects in different application fields, all under the IA umbrella.
