Finding the imaginary winner of the Euroleague 2019/20
When the 2019/20 Euroleague basketball season got canceled last May, Sergio decided to occupy some of his time while in lockdown building a simulation-based predictive model that would tell us what could have happened. Coincidentally, a few weeks before this, he rated every team in Euroleague’s history using the Elo rating system. Sergio then used this system to build a model to predict the point-spread of future games, which would serve as the basis for simulating the last part of the season 10,000 times and see what scenarios were more likely according to this model. In this talk, Sergio will walk us through all the steps (and code) that led to Anadolus Efes Istanbul being the imaginary winner of the 2019/20 Euroleague.
Sergio Olmos is a statistician at ISGlobal where he focuses on research related to air pollution and the urban environment. However, just until last year, he had been a professional basketball player in Spain for over a decade. He is still linked to basketball as he is also a data science consultant for ALBA Berlin, using player-tracking data to monitor training load and assess physical performance. Moreover, he has built several open-source R packages for getting and analyzing basketball-generated data from different leagues in Europe.
