Applied Artificial Intelligence: PAMWater’s Case Study
Artificial Intelligence emerged during the last century as a way to emulate human intelligence in machines. In these last years, Machine Learning has risen to prominence. This sub-domain of AI focuses on giving machines the ability to classify, predict, or forecast, without being explicitly programmed to do so, being able to address complex non-deterministic problems. Several distinct stakeholders are making use of ML to create disruptive solutions. PAMWater’s project focuses on advancing wastewater treatment plants, with applied artificial intelligence enabling water systems’ companies to optimize their energetic efficiency, analyse water characteristics, and the effect that the weather has in water volumes.
Paulo Novais is a Full Professor of Computer Science at the Department
of Informatics, the School of Engineering, the University of Minho (Portugal) and a researcher at the ALGORITMI Centre in which he is the
leader of the research group ISLab – Synthetic Intelligence lab, and the
coordinator of the research line Computer Science and Technology (CST). President of General Assembly and Former president of APPIA (the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence) between 2016 and
2019, Senior member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers), Member of the IFIP (International Federation for Information
Processing) – TC 12 Artificial Intelligence and of the executive committee of the IBERAMIA (IberoAmerican Society of Artificial Intelligence), and Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the Gulbenkian Scholarship Program “New Talent in Artificial Intelligence” of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Bruno Fernandes holds a PhD in Informatics from the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal. He has been working as an AI Researcher/ML Engineer for more than 4 years now. As a software engineer/analyst for more than 8 years. He is currently focused on his research on Machine Learning, Affective Computing, Smart Cities, Internet of Things, and Blockchain, at the ALGORITMI Centre, a research unit of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho. He has conceived multiple solutions specimens applied to traffic flow forecasting, personality assessment, boredom detection, smart cities, and wastewater treatment plants, among others. He is also an Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Minho, lecturing Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems.
Pedro Oliveira is a PhD student in Informatics, at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, in Braga, Portugal. He is also a
researcher at the ALGORITMI Center, namely in the Synthetic Intelligence Lab (ISLAB) research group. He holds a Master’s degree in Informatics Engineering from the same university. His research interests include Recurrent Neural Networks, Predictive Models, Time Series Problems, Anomaly Detection, and Decision Support Systems.
