A call for applications for a Research Fellowship – Junior Data Consultant is open at Nova School of Business and Economics (NOVA SBE) under the Project WiTH Africa, under development by the Nova SBE Data Science Knowledge Center, the Nova SBE Westmont Institute of Tourism & Hospitality, and funded by the Westmont Hospitality Group, with the following conditions:

All candidates should be currently enrolled in a master’s program and available to dedicate part-time to the fellowship (mandatory).
Background in Management, Economics, Finance or Business Analytics (preferred).

Additional courses or experiences in Project Management/ Consulting (preferred).
Demonstrated interest in social good (e.g., worked with or for a non-profit/ impact driven organization) (preferred).

Nova SBE WiTH – Westmont Institute for Tourism and Hospitality, partnered with Nova SBE’s Data Science Knowledge Center (DSKC) to develop an online platform with comprehensive data and educational resources, enabling the study of tourism dynamics in Africa and supporting the industry’s sustainable development. This project is an interdisciplinary endeavour that aims to improve the quality of tourism-related data in Africa, generate knowledge and insights, and foster data-driven decision-making within the African tourism sector. In the long run, the project aims to develop tools and knowledge to monitor the evolution of the tourism industry in Africa and translate data into actionable insights. It will also provide an extensive set of data that allows to study the dynamics of tourism in Africa and support the sustainable development of the industry.

Main Goal:

Support the development of the WiTH Africa Platfrom.
You will be part of a team composed of a Project Manager, a Junior Data Scientist, and an Advisory Board with senior members from both WiTH and DSKC.

Main responsibilities:

Assisting in the design of research plans for data gathering and analysis.
Assisting on strategic data-related decisions by collecting, analysing, and internally managing data.
Identifying key datasets to feed the platform and corresponding data sources.
Establishing partnerships to guarantee access to data.
Assisting in the communication with the project’s relevant stakeholders.
Coordinating the concept development and user experience definition, in partnership with external service providers.
Developing a detailed project plan, together with the technical team, to monitor and track progress.
Ensuring that all tasks are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget, to deliver the platform.
Reporting and escalating issues to management as needed.
Performing risk management to minimize project risks.
Developing project status’ reports and briefings.
Creating and maintaining comprehensive project documentation.

Research Fellowship Holder Statute (“Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica”), approved by Law n.º 40/2004, of 18th August, subsequently amended and republished by Decree-Law n.º 202/2012, of 27th August, updated in accordance with Decree-Law n.º 233/2012, of 29th October, Law n.º 12/2013, of 29th January, and with Decree-Law n.º 89/2013, of 9th July, updated in accordance with Decree-Law n.º 123/2019, of 28th August. Fellowship Regulations of Nova SBE, approved by FCT, I.P. by Dispatch of 16th April 2014 and Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of the FCT, I.P. Fellowship Regulations of Nova SBE, approved by FCT, I.P. by Dispatch of 16th April 2014 and Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of the FCT, I.P., approved by Regulation 950/2019, of 16th December.

The research will be conducted at Nova SBE under the scientific supervision of Professor Leid Zejnilovic.

DURATION OF THE FELLOWSHIP:……………………………………………………………………

The fellowship will have a duration of 3 months, with possibility of renewal for the length of the project, subject to an annual review. The fellowship will be awarded on an exclusive basis, as stated in Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of FCT, I.P.

MONTHLY ALLOWANCE:………………………………………………………………………………

The fellowship amounts to €446,12, according to the table of monthly stipends available in the Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of FCT, I.P. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).
