A call for applications for 2 Research Fellowships is open at Nova School of Business and Economics (NOVA SBE) under the Project “Project MD2TRUST (Trustworthy data science for improving healthcare efficiency: the case of the medical referral process)”, CMU/TIC/0016/2021, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia I. P. (FCT), with the following conditions:

All candidates must be enrolled on a master´s or doctoral program. Alternatively, applicants may hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree while being enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units (mandatory).

Background in Management, Economics, Finance, Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering or similar (preferred).

Proficient in programming languages such as Python and R (please provide a link to your GitHub account if possible) (preferred).

Demonstrated experience with deep learning (preferred)

Knowledge of working with different machine learning and deep learning libraries, such as Tensorflow and Pytorch (preferred).

Demonstrated interest in producing scientific publications in field of machine learning (preferred).

The MD2TRUST project aims to develop a recommender system for referral of specialist care doctors to be used by primary care doctors, that is compatible with current referral practice, and that can transparently encourage organizational change, towards a more effective patient-centric healthcare management. This project will analyse the current state of medical referral in CUF Health and compare it with another reality in the USA. It will implement novel recommendation systems that are trustworthy, advised by policy, not disruptive of the usual referral process used today, and that foster the development of online communities.

 

Main Goal: Support the development of a recommender system for medical specialist referral in Portugal.

 

Main responsibilities:

Get acquainted with the projects’ datasets and support the development of data validation, preparation, and guarantee the data understanding through an Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA);
Support the development and consolidation of project’s pipeline;
Characterizing specialty referral patterns to tackle organizational challenges;
Support the development of accurate models for interpretable extreme classification, under imbalanced label
Support the development of deep learning models (experimentation, evaluation and selection of models);
Support the development of applications/ tools to present the deep learning model’s results;
Support the preparation of the project’s consolidated documentation (Project Charter, EDA, Technical Report, Users’ guide, GitHub repository, among other).
The researcher will attend weekly status meetings with internal stakeholders, periodic status meetings with external stakeholders, as well as any other meetings that are relevant for project deployment.

The research will be conducted at the Nova SBE Data Science Knowledge Center, under scientific supervision of Professor Qiwei Han.

The fellowship will have a duration of 9 months, with possibility of renewal for the length of the project, subject to an annual review. The fellowship will be awarded on an exclusive basis, as stated in Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of FCT, I.P.

The fellowship amounts to €1144,64, according to the table of monthly stipends available in the Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of FCT, I.P. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).

The selection will be carried upon the evaluation of academic merit (40%), evaluation of the CV (30%), interviews (20%), and motivation letter (10%).
